Acclaimed American artist George Caleb Bingham was a prolific painter credited with over 1000 portraits. The UMFA is pleased to have two Bingham paintings on exhibition, Portrait of Mrs. James Thomas Birch (Margaret Eliza Nelson Birch) and Forest Hill (The Nelson Home in Booneville, Missouri). The portrait includes a tribute to Mrs. James Thomas Birch’s children as they are represented by the 7 flowers she holds and wears.
