Collection Highlight: Two George Caleb Bingham Paintings

George Caleb Bingham (American, 1811-1879), Portrait of Mrs. James Thomas Birch (Margaret Eliza Nelson Birch), no date, oil on canvas, Donated by Mary Stephens DeWall, Margaret Stephens Anderson, Cordelia Stephens Birrell, and William Fulton Stephens, Jr., in loving memory of our mother Anna Louise Birch Stephens. UMFA# 2007.12.1

Acclaimed American artist George Caleb Bingham was a prolific painter credited with over 1000 portraits.  The UMFA is pleased to have two Bingham paintings on exhibition, Portrait of Mrs. James Thomas Birch (Margaret Eliza Nelson Birch) and Forest Hill (The Nelson Home in Booneville, Missouri). The portrait includes a tribute to Mrs. James Thomas Birch’s children as they are represented by the 7 flowers she holds and wears. The eighth unopened bud symbolizes the child whose birth she is awaiting.

In celebration of Bingham’s bicentennial (he was born on March 20, 1811), The George Caleb Bingham Catalogue Raisonné Supplement Of Paintings & Drawings just announced the discovery of 10 Bingham paintings, which can be viewed at www.georgecalebbingham.org.
