Collection Hightlight: Silvery Night Back on Exhibition

before and after conservation pictures of silvery night paiting

A favorite painting in the American Galleries is now back on exhibition after an extended absence.

Silvery Night by Ralph Albert Blakelock recently underwent a conservation treatment to remove a yellowed varnish.  Conservators from the Western Center for the Conservation of Fine Art also found a wax coating underneath the varnish that had been used to cover cracks in the paint. The varnish and wax were both removed and now the details of the painting are much more defined, both in shape and color.
