In case you haven’t heard, the UMFA will be temporarily closing for renovations and re-installation starting January 18. Since we won’t be seeing you all in the Museum again until spring 2017, we figured it was necessary to throw a huge weekend-long party full of everything you love about the UMFA. Oh, and did I mention it will be completely free?! Free admission to the galleries, free yoga, free art-making, free film screenings, free chamber music… The list goes on and on.
The Long Live Art! Kickoff Party on Saturday, January 16, and Sunday, January 17, will be the public’s last opportunity to visit the Museum before we pause our exhibition program. We’ll temporarily close starting Monday, January 18, to upgrade the vapor barrier system in the Marcia and John Price Museum Building—which will help us more efficiently and effectively maintain optimal humidity levels while extending the life of the building itself—and to reinstall the permanent collection galleries. We’re anticipating reopening in spring 2017.
During the temporary closure, the Museum staff will be busy remodeling gallery spaces, reinventing most of the permanent exhibitions, and re-imagining other aspects of Museum operations.
“We want to accomplish two goals during this time: protect the building that protects the art and create brand new experiences for our visitors,” says Gretchen Dietrich, our executive director. “I’m genuinely excited about the work ahead, and I look forward to welcoming everyone back to the UMFA in 2017.”
We will miss having you all in the Museum while we’re closed in 2016, but before we get too sad talking about that… let’s get back to talking about the party!
