August 29, 2016 by umfablog

Guest blogger: Courtney-Rae Reinecke, UMFA ACME Intern Outside the Glendale Branch of the Salt Lake City Public Library, break dancing erupted when DJ Dynamic started busting out the beats. Onlookers ate pizza and enjoyed the dancing and music, while artist Zach Franzoni from Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts prepped canvases for a collaborative graffiti session. As the crowd swelled (ultimately to some 200 people), so did the excitement for what this May 11 ACME Session hosted by the Utah Museum of […]

A Not-So-Sunny Excursion to Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels

June 30, 2016 by umfablog

Guest blogger: Ali Mitchell, UMFA intern, U of U senior art history major In April, the UMFA led an adventure that demonstrated exactly what makes our new ARTLandish: Land Art, Landscape, and the Environment program so unique and engaging. What we envisioned as a fun-filled day of art activities and desert lounging at Nancy’s Holt’s Sun Tunnels (located far from any paved road in Utah’s West desert) became a more adventurous undertaking than anyone foresaw. It was a totally different […]

In case you haven’t heard, the UMFA will be temporarily closing for renovations and re-installation starting January 18. Oh, and did I mention it will be completely free?! Free admission to the galleries, free yoga, free art-making, free film screenings, free chamber music… The list goes on and […]

November 18, 2015 by umfablog

Guest Blogger: Stephanie Hufford Hey everyone! I’m back one last time to talk about the final results of our survey of the UMFA’s European paintings collection. It’s been a while since you’ve heard from me, so I’ll catch you up a little first. November 5, 2015 by umfablog

Constructing the Utah Landscape, an interactive companion exhibition to The British Passion for Landscape: Masterpieces from National Museum Wales, on view now at the UMFA, exposes the many tools artists use as they approach the genre. Through a variety of hands-on activities, visitors can experiment with artistic techniques on replicas of the Utah scenes on view in the gallery. From shifting the horizon line to using colored filters, visitors can manipulate the key elements of a landscape—assigning the meaning and mood […]

The nearly $100,000 grant will allow Museum staff to ensure the longevity of 798 of the metal objects in our Asian and African collections, some of which are in critical need of remediation. “This project is an important development in the UMFA’s continuing effort to raise standards of care for […]
